The stretch of coast between Küçükkuyu and Assos remains a quiet backwater while the rest of the Gulf has grown into a boomtown of cheap holiday housing. The olive groves come down to the shore. The sea is unusually clear, and fringed with pebbly beaches. The hills are unscarred by recent construction. Here and there are some makeshift beach "motels", consisting of a few wood or adobe bungalows crouching low in the olive groves.
Kanara Motel is the least makeshift of the lot, and in our experience the most pleasantly run. It offers a large garden set directly by the sea, a freshly mowed lawn, a sunbathing quay, and 16 cabin-style units which are faced with natural stone and somewhat more comfortably furnished than the usual. Mr Kılınç ran a restaurant for many years in Germany; his partner is a retired judge of the High Court. They take special pride in the quality of their beachfront restaurant.
